Well-written titles and meta descriptions can effectively bring more traffic to any website. In short, title tags lead the overall topic of your page in the eyes of search engines, whereas meta descriptions are key for clickthrough from the human being searching for content that's related to your website.
What are title tags and meta descriptions?
The title tag is an HTML/XHTML element that defines the title of your page for search engines — people like us also see title tags just above the URL and at the top of the browser. Similarly, meta descriptions are HTML/XHTML attributes that concisely summarize the contents of each page of each website. Meta descriptions should be between 160-320 words and are displayed beneath the clickable blue links when you search for something and get results.
Why are they important?
Both title tags and meta descriptions are important for SEO. In fact, according to Moz.com, the world's biggest SEO community, after your content as a whole, title tags are the single most important element of on-page SEO. Titles give users a sense of what's coming and what a page is all about in an instant. If your titles aren't on point, Google will not surface your website in search results. There also won't be much clicking going on (or there will be too much of the wrong kind of clicking, bringing you traffic that doesn't stay).
Meta descriptions are also crucial to SEO. If Google thinks yours are off or are unhelpful to people, they'll simply pull text from other areas on your page and turn that into that page's meta description. Answer the searchers's query well with a meta description and you'll get more qualified leads on your pages. Although Google doesn't reward keywords in meta descriptions, they do reward descriptions that influence people to click into your site — and keep them there when they find what they're looking for.
Here are actionable strategies for titles and meta descriptions that will get you more action and engagement. Create optimized, high-value titles and meta descriptions tailored for your content, and you will drive more targeted traffic right where you want it.
Let's start with four top tips for meta descriptions:
1. Use keywords in meta descriptions
Search engines aren't doling out points for keywords in meta descriptions, but keep in mind that users feel compelled to click only when they see the words that are relevant to their search. The right words associated with their query are part of your search engine results page (SERP) entry that gets clicked on.
Now, refine the meta description for your Weebly site — for every single page.(Remember, in the Editor, the meta description is called the Page Description.)

Product Pages: Go to Store > Products > Product you want to edit > SEO Settings > Page Description

2. Don't obsess about snippet length
You have a maximum of 320 characters for your meta description. Google's longer search snippets, however, focus on pixels, not characters. This means that the perfect meta description might change with the width of the device, hovering between 920 to 1,840 pixels, or 160 and 320 characters.
Another wrinkle is that Google pulls content to generate longer, unique descriptions “as needed." The bottom line: don't worry too much about the ideal number of characters.
3. Avoid duplicate descriptions
Google won't penalize you for duplicate meta descriptions, but for better results, avoid duplicates anyway. It's better to let Google generate unique descriptions based on the query than to use the identical meta description for every page on your site.
Your meta description is a pitch; only a specific, value-added pitch will prompt a click through. All of your meta descriptions together are your means of contouring your brand message and controlling the narrative surrounding your site.
4. Optimize for rich snippets
Rich Snippets refers to structured data markup you can add to their existing HTML so search engines better understand what's on your page. Most search engines, following Google, also use rich snippets markup to enrich search results, so results have more detail and satisfy queries more effectively.

5. Choose exciting language
Dull copy is common in meta descriptions — but that's no excuse. Exciting copy that builds expectations distinguishes your link from others and increases CTRs, conversions and traffic. Keep your language appealing by avoiding keyword stuffing and keeping a natural feel and sound. Avoid the meta description that reads like a bot pulled the 50 most important words in the post into one paragraph.
Keep meta descriptions specific and include all details to match the page's content. Use numbers, special characters and symbols, which people love to share. Make sure every piece of copy, including your meta description, is speaking to target customers, addressing pain points. Include a gentle CTA when appropriate.

Optimizing title tags
You should also create a custom title tag for every single post and page. The title tag is the headline that tells everyone from your latest visitor to Google what each page is all about — using one or two crucial keywords within a 50 to 60 character sentence.

More accurate tax calculations
It's a time honored tradition to complain about taxes. Luckily, with our automatic tax calculator you’ll spend less time and energy calculating the tax you should charge your customers, and more time growing your business. Last month, we updated our tax calculator to be more consistent in how it calculates those taxes, while remaining in line with industry standards. For example, since California has a complex mixed origin/destination tax rules for intrastate sales, we will be calculating on a simplified destination basis following industry best practices. Now you can have more confidence in tax calculations so you can focus more on selling and developing your products. Automatic tax calculations require the Weebly Business plan or above.
Simplifying purchases of digital goods
When you have an online store, it’s important to make every step of the purchase flow as easy as possible for your customers. One way to simplify the process is to request only the most critical information from them. That’s why we added an option for you not to collect shipping addresses for digital goods if you’re not charging tax on them and they’re available worldwide. To sell digital goods you need to be on the Weebly Business plan or above.
An easier way to set up your store to accept credit cards
Not sure what the differences between Square, Stripe and Paypal are? We made it easier for you to choose the right credit card processor by highlighting the differences between each and recommending the best option for your store. This feature is now available to all our customers in the USA. To accept payments you need to be on the Weebly Starter plan or above.
GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation)
The General Data Protection Regulation places new obligations on organizations that process personal data of subjects located within the EU and went into effect May 25, 2018. As a result we have released a few features and resources in order for us to process data in a complaint way. We also have made tools and features available to our site owners and merchants who wish to take steps towards GDPR compliance with regards to their visitors and customers.

Improved GDPR Privacy Notice and Terms of Service. We updated our Terms of Service to better explain our relationship with you. We also made our Privacy Notice clearer by defining key terms, describing our data processing practices and including examples showing how we implement this Policy.

- We created a ‘Opt-out Element’ so you can give your visitors an easy way to opt out of cookies at any time. If they opt out, they will see your cookie banner again at the top of your website.
- We updated our Form and Newsletter elements to include a checkbox for your users to opt-in to receiving marketing communications from your company. We also provide you with suggested language for GDPR compliance and an opportunity to change that language should you want to.
- We created a process to help you respond to data subject rights requests. If you’d like us to process one of these requests, simply reach out to us at hc.weebly.com, and we can take care of it.
Please be aware that as a result of these changes and regulations there is a chance that the data available to you in the Insight tab might drop if you have many EU visitors who choose to opt out of cookies.

Importing products from Square
We have added an option to create a backup of your product inventory in Weebly before importing products from Square. That way, if there are products that you don’t want to modify, you’ll be able to easily add them again after you finish importing from Square.
Bulk editing products
We have made it easier to edit your products in bulk. This includes batch updating prices and images for product variations. Manage your products faster and focus on selling more!

There are so many options to choose from when it comes to collecting money from customers. But what's the best option for accepting payments?
From PayPal to checks and Square to Authorize.net, finding the right online payment gateway can be overwhelming. But it doesn't have to be. Here's a quick reference for all of the popular payment processing options.
Square does more than just connect with your Weebly website; it lets you share products across Weebly and Square shops with Square+Weebly. Import products and sync online and offline inventory to keep them automatically updated.
Square allows businesses to accept payments online and in person so it can be used for online and offline sales. With Square, you can accept payments from the United States, Canada, Japan, Australia and the United Kingdom.
Square also allows instant credit card transactions and comes with an integrated point of sale checkout. The fee for using Square is 2.9% of each purchase, plus $0.30 per transaction. And you get paid in 1 to 2 business days.
This option is best for businesses with at least 20 items in their online shop or small businesses selling on- and offline.
PayPal is the most-recognized online payment gateway. Integrate the PayPal Express option and users can pay with a credit card even if they don't have a PayPal account. It's trustworthy and easy for customers to understand.
PayPal also allows instant credit card transactions and is a powerful tool for nonprofits as well because you can collect donations. The fee for using PayPal is 2.9% of each purchase, plus $0.30 per transaction. The biggest downside is that users get redirected away from your website to PayPal complete the transaction.
This option is best for businesses with just a few items in their online shop or companies that accept donations.
Stripe accepts more than 130 currencies, so it's great for shop owners with an international presence. It also integrates with Apple Pay and Google Pay for great mobile connectivity.
Stripe allows instant credit card transactions and comes with an integrated checkout. The fee for using Stripe is 2.9% of each purchase, plus $0.30 per transaction. You get paid seven days after each transaction.
This option is best for businesses with at least 10 items in their online shop.
Authorize.net is one of the biggest merchant payment gateways in the world. You can accept international payments and using the service comes with the credibility of registering as a merchant. (An application is required.)
There is a catch though — businesses must be located in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Europe or Australia to use the online payment gateway.
Authorize.net comes with an integrated checkout. The fee for using Authorize.net is 2.9% of each purchase, plus $0.30 per transaction and there is a setup fee after a merchant application is completed.
This option is best for larger online shops with at least 20 items available.
The safest way to collect payments online is through a verified payment processor. Most shops should not bother with check or cash transactions for online purchases.
Stripe, PayPal, Authorize.net and Square are easy to use and are available to integrate directly with your Weebly website, for all plans Starter and above.
Running you business from your mobile phone has never been easier. Weebly's mobile app contains a full suite of features for building and editing your website, and so much more than that. Within the Weebly mobile app, you can track your orders and inventory, monitor comments on your products and blogs and view real-time website statistics.
One of the most useful features is the notifications. What better feeling than feeling your phone buzz and looking down to see a new sale? You can watch in real time as your business grows, and respond to sudden increases or decreases in sales. For iOS, Make sure you turn on the notifications feature when you are setting up your Weebly mobile app to receive updates. Android users will already be opted in for notifications.
Monitoring website statistics is also super handy from within the Weebly app.
But some features, like email marketing campaigns, require accessing the Weebly website from a browser like Chrome. This can still be accomplished right from your phone. Just steer your mobile browser to Weebly.com and log in from there. If you use Facebook or Google to log in, make sure you have your phone in landscape mode or else you might not see the correct login button.
Once logged in, you will have access to all the features of Weebly that are normally available from a desktop computer, including advanced email marketing options.

But if you are truly commanding your business remotely, there are a few more tools which can help outside of the Weebly app. Here are some great third-party apps that every creative entrepreneur on-the-go should consider.
Payment Processor: Square
If you're looking for a solution to accept offline sales at the farmers market or at a craft trade show, for example, Square is perfect for you. What makes Square stand out as the go-to app for processing payments is its simplicity. The user interface is downright intuitive. And beneath the layer of simplicity designed for day-to-day sales is a powerful system to deal with more complicated business matters. No matter what kind of payment you might take, from cash to check to credit card, it's all right there. If you need to apply discounts, gift cards, payment in kind, you can document it all and adjust your inventory with a few taps of the screen.
Square makes it incredibly easy to process payments on the go. Plus, Weebly has a deep integration with Square allowing you sync your online and offline payments.
Saving Notes and Files: Evernote
When you're out and about and a thought occurs to you, what are you going to do? You need to write it down. Evernote is the best app for keeping track of all your on-the-go business ideas. From text to voice to pictures, just add them to Evernote. You can even annotate pictures right within the software. You can search all your notes like your own private Google. Optical character recognition will try to read the text from pictures and add that to your search results as well. Evernote is also continuously synced across all your devices.
Want to save an article and read it offline later? Use Evernote. Want to save an mp3 file that will sync to all your devices? Use Evernote. Got a video file, a PDF or a file type that nobody has ever heard of before? Well, as long as it isn't incredibly huge, Evernote has you covered. Just attach it to a note.
Universal search is a breakthrough in productivity, and while Evernote isn't the only service to offer it, it may be the best. Make sure you kick the tires and see if it works with your personality.
Secure Communications: Signal
Privacy is the name of the game when it comes to messaging apps. The competition is fierce, but Signal gets the nod due because it is open source, trusted by journalists around the world and recommended by the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF). It can do voice chat, video chat, text chat and even send self-destructing messages. All of this is encrypted from end-to-end, which is considered the gold standard in communications privacy. If you're communicating about your business on-the-go, try Signal for extra security.
VPN Service: Private Internet Access (PIA) VPN
Whether from mobile or laptop, if you connect to public WiFi, security experts highly recommend that you use an encrypted VPN connection. This is because hackers sometimes have a way to intercept data on these public networks. It is a serious threat, and many hacks begin this way. With an encrypted connection provided by a quality VPN, your hacker may intercept your data, but it will just be encrypted nonsense and completely useless.

Cloud File Sharing: Dropbox
The simplicity of shared folders is a must for many business owners. Drop a file in, and everyone with that folder has access with Dropbox. Share folders with family, with coworkers and some with clients. Using their services is far less clunky than sending attachments through email.
But there's one caveat to keep in mind. With cloud file sharing, you are trading security for simplicity. Document, Data and Accounting Collaboration: Airtable
With several approaches to team collaboration available, you'll have to figure out which service works best for you. For live collaboration of a single document, many people choose the simplicity of Google Docs. But some teams will get a lot more mileage out of collaborative spreadsheets.
Airtable is not only beautiful, it makes creating and using tables simple for those who are uncomfortable in Excel. But there are some tradeoffs for the power user. If you require more advanced functions, you may have to use Office 365 or Google Sheets.
As you can see, there are numerous apps both within Weebly and through third-party services that make it easy to stay on top of your business when you're on-the-go. By using these apps, you can easily and efficiently run your business from your phone.

Inventory management is more than just know what products you sell and how many you have available. A powerful inventory management system helps you organize products so they are easy for you and your shoppers to find.
You can directly add inventory items or upload a spreadsheet in CSV format to add multiple items at once. Just log in to your Weebly Dashboard to get started.
Add categories to group similar products if you have a wide selection available. Use categories that make logical sense to users – think women's shoes, men's shoes and children's shoes.

For Public Espresso, a small-batch coffee roastery and espresso bar in Buffalo, New York, the company's website is more than just a place for tempting pictures of pastries and beautiful latte art. It's also an essential component of their sales and marketing strategy for both their retail and wholesale business.
As co-owner Sam Scarcello explains, "our business is multifaceted with retail, wholesale and online programs, and we needed a website that could seamlessly highlight and advertise each of these programs effectively." With so much to juggle, the Public Espresso team had to make smart decisions to ensure their website met their ambitious needs. Here are some of their tips for success.
1. Consistency Builds Trust
"Visitors to your site are coming from all over the place," says Scarcello. That's why the Public Espresso team works hard to make sure their website works with other online destinations, from social media channels to review websites.
As Scarcello explains, "people know an outdated website when they see one." If there's a disconnect between your marketing and the actual experience a customer has on your website, it can reduce trust in your brand. This is especially true for mobile versions of your website, which need to be as intuitive as possible to meet customer expectations in the ubiquitous age of smartphones.
2. ECommerce is About Simplicity and Options
In addition to highlighting the company's retail store, Public Espresso's website is also used for eCommerce. When it comes to online ordering, Scarcello's advice is to focus on simplicity while also providing flexible options for customers.
"The number of options for paying and shipping has grown exponentially in the last few years," Scarcello says, "and being flexible and open to those options gives people confidence in their online shopping and lets them know that you're a forward-thinking company." The more simple and convenient you can make the ordering process, the more likely your customers will return for repeat business.
3. Focus on Your Customers' Needs
While Public Espresso's website supports the business in a number of ways, Scarcello advises business owners to focus first on what their customers need.
"Our website has to relay a lot of information (locations and menus, employment opportunities, online retail, our blog, etc.), but thankfully, Weebly allows us to do just that," says Scarcello. If your business is more sales focused or more informational, you might consider focusing on different features.
4. A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words
No matter what features you settle on, you can't underdeliver on design, especially when it comes to selecting photography for your website. According to Scarcello, in a time when everyone uses Instagram and understands how to use basic photo editing software, "there are no excuses" to have mediocre images on your site.
"If you're not confident in your own skills," Scarcello says, "there are scores of royalty free stock image sites, and Weebly even offers its own wealth of stock content, free of charge." Taking advantage of these services and selecting quality images can make a huge difference in how your website, and therefore your entire brand, is perceived.

NEW! Print packing slips with your logo, items shipped and return policy
Now you can reinforce your brand on your packing slip for each shipment you make. Remind your customers of your brand when your product arrives in the mail.
You can also list your return policy on the packing slip in order to increase communication with your customers. And if you want to go the extra mile, think about including an additional personal note. Sometimes it’s the little details that make the difference!

Easier, streamlined ‘Add a Product’ flow
We redesigned the way you add new products to your Weebly store, making it easier and faster, so you can run your store more efficiently.
You can now choose whether your product is a physical good, digital good or a service without clicking on a drop down menu.
We’re adding filters to the Product Options table so you can find them faster. We’re also adding bulk editing and deleting functionality. To do this, first select the checkbox of the product variations you want to change, click in any field and you’ll be able to immediately update those fields. You can change most fields - even add images in bulk!
SEO title and description options for each product are easier to find so you can help customers discover your products on your online store and grow your business.

Set up your store to accept credit cards
You turned your idea into a product (hurray!). You built your online store and it looks great (hurray!). Now, all you need to do is setup your store to accept credit card payments so that you can start selling (hurray! Wait, but how do I do that?).
We’re making it easier for you to choose the right credit card processor by highlighting the differences between each and recommending the best option for your store. Weebly provides you with great options like Stripe, Square and Paypal. We’re rolling out this feature in phases so watch out for it!

When you sign up with Weebly, you become part of a vibrant community of artists, creators and entrepreneurs that support each other and that lets their voice be heard. This month, we tackled a couple of suggestions from our community:
- Alt tags for Logo images. Alt tags are now automatically added to your logo images using your Site Title. This helps search engines like Google understand what your site is about and drive more visitors to your website.
- Include coupon information in order exports. A common practice among Weebly entrepreneurs is to download a CSV file of your orders to manage shipping and inventory. You can now include a column that identifies whether a coupon code was used when purchasing an item. This will make it easier for you to evaluate and measure the success of your coupons and marketing campaigns.

Yes, your website will absolutely remain live. There will be no changes to your online presence for the foreseeable future.

Do the three letters S-E-O make your head spin? Search engine optimization is an important part of any website design, although it is often one of the most confusing and least fun elements of creating an online presence.
Search guidelines frequently change and can be somewhat hard to master if you aren't versed in the language of SEO. Here, we have a guide with everything you need to know to make your website easier to find through search engines and how to do it all using Weebly.
Alt text is optional text that you can add to an HTML element, making something with no words "readable" to search engines. Currently, search engines can only read words; they don't "see" what's in photos or videos. By using alt text (also called alt tags), you explain to search engines what information is in a photo and how it relates to your content.
Ideally, the alt text includes a short description of what's in the image and the primary keyword for the page it appears on. For eCommerce, make sure to include a short product description. Ideally, these descriptions are 125 characters or less.
How to do it: Every image on your website should include alt text. To add an alt tag in Weebly, upload the image, then click on the image and Advanced > Alt Text.
Breadcrumbs are a navigational tool that show users the path they have taken on a website. While they aren't common on small websites, breadcrumbs are important for eCommerce or online shops and websites with a lot of content because they keep users from getting lost.
According to Google, search uses breadcrumb markup in the body of a web page to categorize the information from the page in search results.
How to do it: Adding breadcrumbs does require a little knowledge of HTML and CSS. Add custom code in the Weebly editor if you want to include breadcrumb navigation.
Crawling is what happens when a search engine bot "reads" your website. The information is kept in a massive index that websites such as Google, Yahoo! and Bing use to direct traffic.
Your biggest job is to create an easy-to-read website to avoid crawl errors, such as DNS errors, server connection slowness or code bugs, that can impact search rankings.
How to do it: By using Weebly, many of these issues are already taken care of. Your Weebly design comes with clean, readable code that search engines can understand. But you can ask Google to recrawl your website if you have made major changes.
Whenever a search engine removes your content from its results, the content has been delisted or deindexed. This can happen if you delete a page or violate best practices (such as using black hat SEO techniques); it can also happen if your website has been flagged as malicious or infected with a virus.
Deindexing can be temporary or permanent.
How to do it: There's nothing for you to do here. Search engines will automatically delist URLs/pages if they are deleted from your website.
Each time you link to something on your website, search engines take note. External links go to any website that is not your domain.
Search engines learn your content and understand your place in the world of everything out there using these links. Links establish your credibility as a resource for what you offer, as it pertains to keywords and other websites that understand your authority.
Focus on linking to high-quality, reputable external sources. Cramming your website with links isn't effective. One or two external links per page are typically enough.
How to do it: Link purposefully and to content that relates to yours. Opt for high-quality links – to domains that end in .edu, .gov and .org as authoritative sources – and .com websites that pertain to your content.
High ranking searches sometimes include additional information from the source about what was searched, this is known as a featured snippet. Featured snippets most commonly appear in Google search results when the user asks a question (who, what, when, where, how or why) and the answer includes easy to understand information (often in the form of a sentence or list).
This is the ultimate location in search for content and is also known as "position zero."
How to do it: Weebly apps can include snippets, which is built using a bit of HTML code. Snippets are usually used to generate a script tag and should use a non-blocking method of loading external scripts.
A Googlebot is the primary search bot used by Google to index and rank sites. It crawls pages.
How to do it: There's nothing to do here, but knowing that bots and automated processes impact search is half the battle when it comes to optimizing your website for search.
Heading tags might be the most important element you can create when it comes to search. These SEO terms – H1 through H6 in the code – tell search bots what's most important on your pages. Plus, when styled with a little CSS, these elements can make your website easier for people to read as well. (Using H1 through H6 is how you make every headline or sub-headline look the same way.)
Headings are ranked in priority of H1 (highest) to H6 (lowest). Most websites use H1 for page titles, H2 for sub-headlines throughout the copy and H3 for smaller headers (such as names of lists or other information). H4 through H6 are not used as frequently.
How to do it: Use headers to help organize content. Aim to have multiple sub-headlines (H2) on each page of content. Create a style – font, size, and color – for headings from the Weebly dashboard's theme design options. Click on the headline or sub-headline buttons in the header area or paragraph titles button in the general section to customize elements.
Inbound links are links coming to your website from other sources. Just like external links they, help build credibility between websites.
How to do it: You want high-quality links coming to your website from sources that relate to your product or content. Writing content for other blogs that link to your website is one way to build partnerships and create inbound links.
Juice is the SEO power of a website. High-ranking websites have more juice than low-ranking sites. External and inbound links with a lot of juice can positively impact your search ranking as well.
How to do it: Using SEO best practices (such as those outlined in this article) are your best tool for increasing your website's juice.
The words or phrases that identify content on your website are called keywords. These can be words people use to search to find you or words you identify with to draw users to your website.
The words that are most used on a website help search engines determine what the site is about and what pages are most relevant or related to certain types of content.
How to do it: Make sure to use the words and phrases that communicate your product or service throughout the website design. Use these words in natural language as you write the copy, but don't overstuff. If it feels like a word is repeated too many times, it probably is.
Local SEO helps you get your brand in front of customers that are in a physical location near you. (Think of how often you search "food near me" when looking for a place to eat.) Local SEO helps you find those locations.
How to do it: The biggest thing you can do to make sure you are visible in local search is to include your name, address and phone number on your website. (The footer is a great place to put this information.) Use the same NAP (name, address, phone number) when you create listings on other websites.
The description of your website – coming in at about 300 characters – provides additional information about the website via snippet description. While it doesn't contribute to SEO per se, it can help generate more organic clicks, which does boost search ranking.
There are other types of meta tags used throughout your website as well, such as descriptions for each page, images (see alt tag) and the title tag.
How to do it: If there is a place to fill in descriptive information about your website, do it. You can find much of the meta information in the SEO Settings tab under Pages in the Weebly dashboard. Make sure to fill in fields with text that relates to your website, and that is free of errors.
A noindex tag tells search engines not to index a page, excluding it from search. This can be great for pages that you want to keep private, such as special landing pages for deals, staff information or even your website style guide.
How to do it: You can set a page not to index from the Weebly editor. From the Pages tab, select the page, then SEO Settings. Copy and paste this code into the Header box:

Some of the most important promotion you do for your website might not be on your website. Off-page SEO refers to all the other stuff you do to help build brand awareness (and get people to your website). This includes link building, social media marketing, content generation and publishing, email marketing, and print advertising.
This all proves how important it is to have an integrated strategy when it comes to your website, brand and small business or online shop. Every piece and element you put out there contributes to your overall brand image … and SEO.
How to do it: Create a brand strategy from the start. Grab social media channels with the same name and handle that connect to your website and start sharing.
PPC or Pay-Per-Click
Pay-per-click or PPC ads are digital campaigns that get users to visit your website. Google is one of the largest sellers of PPC ads in the market, through Google AdWords. And PPC can help drive users to your website, increasing search ranking.
The best strategy is to add some PPC spending to your overall digital strategy if you have the budget for it. Make sure PPC messaging and ads use the same keywords and imagery as your website for a uniform presence online.
How to do it: Get started with the Beginner's Guide to Google AdWords from Search Engine Watch. It explains how the platform works and how you can learn to use it quickly.
The words a user types into the search bar are a query.
How to do it: This one is easy! Visit your favorite search engine, type something in and see what results pop up.
A redirect, temporary or permanent, sends users and search engines from the page requested to another location. This commonly happens when content is moved to another place or when URLs change for another reason.
The two types of redirects are 301 Permanent redirects and 302 Temporary redirects. Regarding SEO, a redirect tells search engines that everything from an old page (or everything important) has been moved to a new location.
How to do it: When you move from another website to Weebly, it is likely that you will need to set up a redirect in the Editor. You can do this from the Settings tab and then click SEO.
A schema is a type of microdata that creates a rich snippet in search results. It provides contextual information for search engines to better understand what's on a website.
Adding structured data is pretty complicated, and there are questions as to whether is provides real value. If you have strong, quality content in the website design, you probably don't have to mess with schema markup.
How to do it: While it is good to know what schema is, you probably don't need to use it.
The meta tag that is the title of a web page is the title tag, and it's probably the most important thing you can do for on-site SEO. It is the title search engines use and display, so it should use keywords relevant to your overall website.
But it has to be more than just a keyword because people will read it to choose whether to visit the page or not. The title should be written in a purposeful and sensible manner concisely (typically 65 characters or less).
This text will show up as a clickable title in search results and browser tabs.
How to do it: With a Weebly website, you can have unique titles for each page. Enable this setting from the Settings tab, then click General and Site Title. Uncheck "show title on top of your pages." Adjust individual page settings for standard, product and storefront pages as well as blog posts. (Note that the Weebly editor calls title tags "page titles.")
Websites with strong content that isn't duplicated on other websites get major credibility – and SEO points – from Google. This unique content can be a major driver of traffic to your website.
How to do it: If you have an online shop, consider product reviews to boost your unique content offering. Try to provide useful information to users that they can't find anywhere else.
"Hey, Siri." Anytime someone asks a device to perform a search, that's voice search. It is one of the most rapid growth areas in search. Voice search is expected to account for half of all searches by 2020, according to a recent report.
The way users search when speaking versus typing tends to be quite different. Users would likely type "pizza near me" but might ask "where is the best place for pizza?" Thinking about how search queries are posed can help you better form the answers to use as part of a question-and-answer format on your website.
How to do it: Make the most of voice search by creating content that asks and answers questions that relate to your product or service naturally. An frequently asked questions (FAQ) page is an ideal location for this kind of content. Weebly has an FAQ app that can help you create an easy to manage FAQ page with just a few clicks.
The number of words in a copy block on a webpage matters. Too little content can reduce search credibility, flagging content as low quality.
While the specific change from time to time, the recommendation is to include 300 words or more on each page so that crawlers find enough content to count it as good quality.
But you have to create quality content. Users won't fall for the 300-word trick, and everything on the page needs to be interesting and engaging to hold their attention. Text that gets read will keep users on your website longer, and that's a good sign for search engines as well.
How to do it: Plan your website design with purpose so that each page contains quality content organized logically. Don't create pages with just a line or two of text, find ways to incorporate those small elements into other locations.
The XML sitemap is a list of all the pages on a website that a search engine needs to know about. It does not include a listing of noindex pages.
How to do it: Weebly automatically creates an XML sitemap for you. To access it, add /sitemap.xml to the end of your homepage URL. You can then submit the XML sitemap to Google to make sure every page gets crawled. (Find instructions here.)
Yahoo! was the first popular search engine. It's been around since 1994. Now, the leader in search is Google. It is followed by YouTube (which is owned by Google), Amazon, Facebook and Bing.
How to do it: When thinking about SEO, prioritize your thinking to put Google first.
The zone file, often referred to as DNS information, is instructions as to how traffic for your domain name should be directed. The file turns a URL into a set of numbers (IP address) that goes to a host and returns content to a user.
Making changes to a website, redesigning a site or changing hosts can have implications for the zone file.
How to do it: This is all taken care of with a Weebly account. Users with a custom domain are automatically connected to the proper IP address and host and don't have to worry about DNS changes. (This is a major advantage of using Weebly to build your website, particularly if you aren't a web designer or coder.)

When was the last time your personal data was stolen? Chances are pretty good you are among those affected by at least one major data breach over the last fifteen years. Poor website security is often a contributing factor that allows attackers access to sensitive data. While you may not maintain an enormous customer database, you can still contribute to the overall security of the web by securing your website.
What is HTTPS?
HTTPS is the secure version of the standard HTTP protocol. HTTPS provides a security layer to protect data during transmission (sending/receiving information in form fields, etc.). HTTPS traffic is encrypted using SSL or TLS encryption method to prevent attackers from extracting content even when a connection is compromised.
Why should I switch to HTTPS now?
HTTPS is important not only for protecting billing details but also for other personally identifiable information. Encrypting information being sent back and forth between the browser and your users can help prevent a number of man-in-the-middle attacks where an attacker secretly steals or alters information as it's being passed from one party to another.
HTTPS can build trust with your audience. A secured website can give customers peace of mind when they send information through a contact form or when they decide to make a purchase. Consumers generally prefer to keep personal and purchase data secured over expending time and effort to replace a stolen credit card or report identity theft (you probably do too).
Securing content is the best reason to secure your site. Another is an upcoming change to Google Chrome. Google has been nudging website owners to move to HTTPS in an effort to better secure the web. In July 2018, a new release of the Chrome web browser (version 68) will mark HTTP sites "not secure." This designation could mean lowered customer satisfaction for websites not using HTTPS as consumers become accustomed to using secure sites.
Third-party scripts and HTTPS
All content on a site must be delivered securely over HTTPS before a web browser will label it as "secure." Third-party scripts that do not provide an HTTPS version will prevent the site's content from being displayed over HTTPS. The unsecured content will not be encrypted and could be vulnerable to interception or attack. If you're unsure about your script usage, you can contact Weebly technical support for advice on how your website might be affected. Be aware that you may need to remove third-party scripts that are not available in an HTTPS version.
How can I use HTTPS with Weebly?
You can enable SSL/TLS from your account dashboard. All new Weebly users receive a TSL certificate by default. If you do not already have TLS enabled on your site and you run into issues activating it, you can contact Weebly technical support to switch it on for you.
