Accurate statistics have always been a strong focus of the Podbean podcasting platform. Over the past few years, we’ve worked hard to use stringent filtering criteria and monitor technology changes to provide the best podcast statistics.
To further this and join with our peers in standardized measurement practices, we have updated our stats system to fully comply with the IAB Podcast Measurement Guidelines. Many of you have asked us about this so we are happy to be able to make this announcement. Fortunately, due to our team’s continuing work over the years this required only minimal change. As of April 3rd, we will release the completely updated system to fulfill all the guidelines.
IAB Podcast Measurement Guidelines: What are they and why does it matter?
“The IAB Podcast Measurement Technical Guidelines 2.0* are the result of the Podcast Technical Working Group’s efforts to provide clarity in the marketplace by developing a common language around measurement. In addition to defining standard metrics for both podcast content and podcast ads, this document also provides guidance on some of the technical details such as request filtering, in order to reduce the discrepancies currently seen across podcast publishers and tech vendors.” –IAB Tech Lab
As the accepted industry standard, advertisers and other interested parties seek statistics that meet these guidelines. Podcasters can confidently provide data knowing there are standard metrics.
What does this mean to me?
With the release of the new stats system, podcasters may see some changes in statistics after April 3rd. Our testing indicates download #s may be reduced by about 10-20%. The reduced number reflects a change in the time period for filtering to get the unique download statistic. In all other ways, the statistics system and data provided will remain the same.
You can contact Support online or via live chat if you have questions about your statistics (or anything else!). We know change, especially when it comes to numbers, can be unsettling. But, we understand the importance of ensuring our metrics are fully comparable. And, we know how valuable this is to our podcasters.
We’ve upgraded the Podbean dashboard to better meet the needs of our diverse users. You’ll notice a few changes, though all the same information is still at your fingertips.
Publisher/Listener View: the main change is that you can now seamlessly switch between your publisher dashboard (“My Podcast”) and listener home page (“Following”) with the touch of a button (at the top right). “My podcast” contains all the information you previously found in your dashboard. Your listener page (“Following”) has the podcasts you follow and other information of interest to you as a listener.
On the home page of your publisher dashboard (“My Podcast”) you will find some handy information (along with reminders if there are any podcast set up tasks you have yet to complete):
- Podcast Performance Snapshot: view recent stats and trends to get an idea of what’s been happening with your podcast
- Top 10 Episodes: a quick review of your highest performing episodes on your main dashboard page
You’ll find all the same tabs on the left sidebar of the publisher dashboard to complete all our podcast admin tasks. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to help.podbean.com.
The Benefits of Podcasting for Corporate Communications
Lots of companies have begun creating podcasts for marketing purposes. The growing popularity of podcasts makes this a great way to get your message out, share your brand and story. But, did you know many companies are discovering podcasting’s benefits for internal corporate communications and training?
Why Start a Podcast for Internal Communications:
1. Create more engaging corporate communications
112 million Americans have listened to a podcast, up 11% last year. 67 million Americans listen to podcasts monthly. That’s good odds that a lot of your employees enjoy podcasts on their personal time. Podcast listeners tend to feel connected to the content, so this is a way to make your communications more appealing and easy to consume.
2. Reach mobile employees
It’s likely that a lot of your workers don’t sit as a desk all day. With mobile options for listening to podcasts, you make it convenient for employees to listen while working on-the-go, traveling or wherever they may be. This is particularly true for sales and service employees who spend much of their time on the road. They can take advantage of time between customer visits and other potential “downtime” so they’re more likely to listen to important internal communications in a timely fashion.
3. Cover your geographies
It’s a global world, which makes scheduling conference calls or webinars a challenge. Someone’s always stuck getting up in the middle of the night. You can replace some of these forms of internal communications with the more convenient, on-demand option of a podcast. Record trainings, webinars, sales announcements and more for listening when it’s convenient for everyone.
4. Segment/target content
Podcast hosting platforms like Podbean make it easy to segment content out to different groups, such as specific teams or geographies. You can provide the right content to the right people. Develop different channels for various needs. Use special features like “time bomb” for time-sensitive content. Create a sophisticated internal communications program without a lot of work.
5. Encourage collaboration
Internal communications messages don’t always have to come from the top or involve complicated production. Podcasting, in particular, can be done pretty easily—even just recording right from a phone with the Podbean app. So, employees and managers with valuable information to share can collaborate and offer that knowledge without a lot of barriers.
Podbean provides robust statistics for you to analyze your podcast’s success. We like to offer as much information as possible on what’s happening with your podcast. Therefore, we previously included “Feed Hits” in your Podbean stats dashboard along with your filtered downloads and other key data. Here’s a full explanation of feed hits and unique downloads.
However, based on customer feedback, we’ve decided to streamline the dashboard to remove “Feed Hits”. Our goal is to eliminate possible confusion and make it easier for podcasters to focus on the key industry metric of unique downloads. For an overview of your Podbean stats and how to use them, check out Four Key Statistics to Understand Your Podcast Audience.
If you still wish to view the detail of feed hits, you can enable them in your Podbean setting page-> Feed/iTunes->Advanced Feed Settings.
In case you missed it, you can also get User Engagement Intel for a deep dive into how your audience is actual engaging with your podcast.
2017 was a busy year here at Podbean. Our Podbean podcaster community now exceeds 160,000 podcasts! The Podbean app continues to grow in popularity, with over 1.5 million installs and 350,000 active weekly users (make sure you’re building engagement with your listeners there).
We continually improve our service and did a lot of feature optimization and behind-the-scene improvements throughout 2017. Here are just a few highlights:
More Social Share Options
The Power of the Email List
Email’s one of the best ways to ensure content gets seen (and heard). So, we made things even simpler for you this year by integrating MailChimp with our Podbean platform. Now, you can automatically send new episodes to your mailing list (and don’t forget to add a Mailchimp signup widget to your site—those email addresses are valuable!).
Growing Monetization Opportunities
We launched our dynamic ads insertion technology as a means to maximize your ad efficiency and revenue. Look for PodAds coming in 2018, which will further expand the podcast advertising landscape with opportunities for shows of all sizes and more targeted campaigns.
Better Data on Your Podcast
Podcasters can get an in-depth look at user listening behavior with User Engagement Intel. To understand how your audience consumes your podcast, simple download numbers aren’t enough. Now you can see how often users listen to an episode, how long they listen, what they skip and more.
Special Features and More Customization
We opened our API to developers, so more services can integrate with Podbean and you can fully customize the Podbean player. With this came the new Podbean app marketplace, offering special features like auto-upload from Dropbox, Time Bomb, and User Engagement Intel. Our designers also added various options to our podcast site themes and players.
We make it easy to podcast on the go right from the Podbean app on your mobile phone.
Keeping Your Podcast on the Cutting Edge
This year we got ahead of the curve by preparing the Podbean platform in advance of the iOS 11 new feed tags. We see the future in smart speakers and connected cars, so we developed the Podbean skill for Alexa and our app supports Android Auto.
Expanding Your Audience: Spotify Partnership
In response to podcaster requests, we signed on as a Spotify partner. You can now directly submit your show for Spotify through your Podbean dashboard. And, our team completed integration with Spotify’s API so you can view their stats in your dashboard.
The Pod Future is Bright
Everyone is predicting big things for podcasting in 2018. We’ve seen top brands, countless celebrities, and even TV shows/networks get into podcasting recently. We feel proud to see the breadth and depth of content our podcasters are creating. Special congratulations go out to our top podcasts from 2017! In 2018 we’ll be bringing you more monetization options, expanded features and new opportunities. Stay tuned.

The 5-Minute Daf Yomi podcast with Rabbi Shmuel Herzfeld is a daily show that’s recently achieved 100,000 downloads. Rabbi Herzfeld has published more than 700 straight episodes of the podcast, which provides commentary and insight into a page of the Talmud in around five minutes. These concise spiritual lessons have been popular with listeners around the world. Rabbi Herzfeld’s podcast was recently featured in a Jewish community newspaper, which shared stories of the many ways the Rabbi has spread Jewish teachings over the years and how podcasting is extending that.
Rabbi Herzfeld took some time to share his thoughts on podcasting with us. Read on to learn how podcasting can be a simple and fruitful way to share a message.
Why did you decide to start a podcast?
I started to do a podcast because I found that not enough people in our congregation were able to attend my daily Talmud class. I originally started it so that I could share one short spiritual teaching with our congregation on a daily basis.
Was starting a podcast easy for you?
I am technologically inept so I was very skeptical about being able to do a podcast. I thought it would take me hours of extra work and that I wouldn’t have the resources to do it. I was shocked at how easy it was for me to record a podcast using the Podbean app. Basically I just use my smartphone and speak into it and then upload it. It’s so simple.
What have you discovered since having a podcast, or what’s surprised you?
When I started I was shocked at how many people listened. The Talmud is a very esoteric text and I use a lot of technical terms but clearly there are fans of the podcast. This gratifies me because I believe the message of the Talmud is a pure spiritual message worthy to share with people.
I am always surprised when strangers tell me that they hear my podcast. One time a lawyer actually cited one of my podcasts as part of a legal proceeding. I got a kick out of it.
But my favorite times are when my children listen to it and cite it back to me.
What tools have you used to promote your podcast?
The only promoting of the podcast that I have done is that I use it as my signature in my email and I post every episode on my Facebook account. (Podbean has auto share options that make social media easy!)
What’s in the future for your podcast?
There are over 2700 pages of the Talmud and it is my goal to do a show for each of the pages. I have less than 2000 episodes to go!
When I am recording the podcast I feel that I am not only making an episode for people today but also a teaching for my children’s children and future generations.
What one thing would you tell someone thinking about starting a podcast?
To all those who think they have a compelling message to share I suggest you don’t worry about how many listeners you will have, just be true to your message!
5-Minute Daf Yomi with Rabbi Shmuel Herzfeld can be found on Podbean. Rabbi Shmuel Herzfeld of Ohev Sholom – The National Synagogue provides commentary and insight into the daily Daf (a page of Talmud studied around the world), offering spiritual lessons from the Torah and Jewish tradition.

The system analyzes users’ behavior to suggest podcasts they might like as well.
The Secret Room Podcast Case Study
Being Featured=An Explosion of Downloads and Subscribers
We always hear from podcasts about their growth in downloads and subscribers after being featured. Today, we’re going to share a case study with specific numbers. The Secret Room podcast was featured in the Podbean recommended banner for a little over a week. Here is what Ben Hamm, co-host of The Secret Room, had to say:
Podcast discovery is an issue that’s been vexing our nascent industry since day one. Aside from word of mouth, which is perhaps the most accessible and powerful marketing tool podcasters have, getting the attention of media is a powerful audience driver. The Secret Room has enjoyed its greatest subscriber bumps when we were featured on iTunes and the Canadian Broadcasting Company….and Podbean.
I’ve been so lucky to receive advice and support from other podcasters. In return to the community I’m delighted to pull back the curtain on the impact being featured on Podbean had on Secret Room downloads. People should note that while being featured is a key part of the puzzle, you also have to have compelling artwork to get those click throughs to your show, and great content to retain ears.
Average release day downloads: increased 80%
Average daily downloads: increased 200%
Podbean subscribers: growth of almost 400%
