Podbean launches programmatic podcast advertising platform
Dover, DE – May 31, 2018 –Podbean has officially launched their supply-side programmatic ads platform. This platform, known as PodAds, will allow brands and media buyers to easily create podcast advertising campaigns to reach their target audiences. The system then dynamically inserts the ads into the podcast episodes and advertisers can monitor delivery statistics to analyze their campaign’s success.
PodAds works like AdSense for podcasts. Podcasters can focus on creating amazing content and Podads will help them auto-monetize their podcast by inserting matched ads into slots they make available. Accurate statistics have always been a strong focus of the Podbean podcasting platform. Over the past few years, we’ve worked hard to use stringent filtering criteria and monitor technology changes to provide the best podcast statistics.
To further this and join with our peers in standardized measurement practices, we have updated our stats system according to the IAB Podcast Measurement Guidelines. Many of you have asked us about this so we are happy to be able to make this announcement. Fortunately, due to our team’s continuing work over the years this required only minimal change. As of April 3rd, we will release the completely updated system to fulfill all the guidelines.
IAB Podcast Measurement Guidelines: What are they and why does it matter?
“The IAB Podcast Measurement Technical Guidelines 2.0* are the result of the Podcast Technical Working Group’s efforts to provide clarity in the marketplace by developing a common language around measurement. In addition to defining standard metrics for both podcast content and podcast ads, this document also provides guidance on some of the technical details such as request filtering, in order to reduce the discrepancies currently seen across podcast publishers and tech vendors.” –IAB Tech Lab
As the accepted industry standard, advertisers and other interested parties seek statistics that meet these guidelines. Podcasters can confidently provide data knowing there are standard metrics.
What does this mean to me?
With the release of the new stats system, podcasters may see some changes in statistics after April 3rd. Our testing indicates download #s may be reduced by about 10-20%. The reduced number reflects a change in the time period for filtering to get the unique download statistic. In all other ways, the statistics system and data provided will remain the same.
You can contact Support online or via live chat if you have questions about your statistics (or anything else!). We know change, especially when it comes to numbers, can be unsettling. But, we understand the importance of ensuring our metrics are fully comparable. And, we know how valuable this is to our podcasters.
We’ve upgraded the Podbean dashboard to better meet the needs of our diverse users. You’ll notice a few changes, though all the same information is still at your fingertips.
Publisher/Listener View: the main change is that you can now seamlessly switch between your publisher dashboard (“My Podcast”) and listener home page (“Following”) with the touch of a button (at the top right). “My podcast” contains all the information you previously found in your dashboard. Your listener page (“Following”) has the podcasts you follow and other information of interest to you as a listener.
On the home page of your publisher dashboard (“My Podcast”) you will find some handy information (along with reminders if there are any podcast set up tasks you have yet to complete):
- Podcast Performance Snapshot: view recent stats and trends to get an idea of what’s been happening with your podcast
- Top 10 Episodes: a quick review of your highest performing episodes on your main dashboard page

The 5-Minute Daf Yomi podcast with Rabbi Shmuel Herzfeld is a daily show that’s recently achieved 100,000 downloads. Rabbi Herzfeld has published more than 700 straight episodes of the podcast, which provides commentary and insight into a page of the Talmud in around five minutes. These concise spiritual lessons have been popular with listeners around the world. Rabbi Herzfeld’s podcast was recently featured in a Jewish community newspaper, which shared stories of the many ways the Rabbi has spread Jewish teachings over the years and how podcasting is extending that.
Rabbi Herzfeld took some time to share his thoughts on podcasting with us. Read on to learn how podcasting can be a simple and fruitful way to share a message.
Why did you decide to start a podcast?
I started to do a podcast because I found that not enough people in our congregation were able to attend my daily Talmud class. I originally started it so that I could share one short spiritual teaching with our congregation on a daily basis.
Was starting a podcast easy for you?
I am technologically inept so I was very skeptical about being able to do a podcast. I thought it would take me hours of extra work and that I wouldn’t have the resources to do it. I was shocked at how easy it was for me to record a podcast using the Podbean app. Basically I just use my smartphone and speak into it and then upload it. It’s so simple.
What have you discovered since having a podcast, or what’s surprised you?
When I started I was shocked at how many people listened. The Talmud is a very esoteric text and I use a lot of technical terms but clearly there are fans of the podcast. This gratifies me because I believe the message of the Talmud is a pure spiritual message worthy to share with people.
I am always surprised when strangers tell me that they hear my podcast. One time a lawyer actually cited one of my podcasts as part of a legal proceeding. I got a kick out of it.
But my favorite times are when my children listen to it and cite it back to me.
What tools have you used to promote your podcast?
The only promoting of the podcast that I have done is that I use it as my signature in my email and I post every episode on my Facebook account. (Podbean has auto share options that make social media easy!)
What’s in the future for your podcast?
There are over 2700 pages of the Talmud and it is my goal to do a show for each of the pages. I have less than 2000 episodes to go!
When I am recording the podcast I feel that I am not only making an episode for people today but also a teaching for my children’s children and future generations.
What one thing would you tell someone thinking about starting a podcast?
To all those who think they have a compelling message to share I suggest you don’t worry about how many listeners you will have, just be true to your message!

Podbean has a great new way for you to easily share new episodes with your subscribers. We’ve integrated with Mailchimp email marketing service for automated email marketing.
To get started, simply get the MailChimp app in the Podbean app marketplace (free for all unlimited accounts). Enable the notification email and configure it as you wish. Then, when you publish a new episode, the email will automatically go out to your MailChimp subscribers (in the mailing list you choose). You can opt not to send an episode by simply clicking the MailChimp option off when publishing.
Connecting Mailchimp with Podbean also allows you to import premium subscribers/private members (if applicable) to your Mailchimp lists.
It’s easy and free to set up a MailChimp account if you don’t have one yet. You can also add a MailChimp subscribe form to your Podbean site, to help build your email list.
